Slugs

98b29y21.jpg

A slug is essentially a locomotive without a prime mover, receiving power for its traction motors via cables from an adjacent locomotive. Typically a slug is built from a former locomotive, with the prime mover replaced with a large concrete or similar weight. Slugs are most effective at slow speeds, where pulling force is needed, such as yard and hump service.
