Harold A. Driscoll's railroad Web sites

Ramblings by your host Harold A. Driscoll

What are my Web sites? or How are they different and similiar? are questions you might reasonably ask. I'll try to answer these questions. You might also see my ramblings about their history.

Chicago.Railfan.Net   presents an eclectic assortment of photographs of railroad equipment and activities in the Chicagoland area. I've included what I liked, what I found interesting, and occasionally that which I particularly didn't like. Since I'm a fan of the Chicago & North Western railroad you'll find it particularly well represented in this photo collection.

This is my premiere railfan photo Web site. It is the largest of my public sites. Chicago.Railfan.Net remains a work in progress, with plans to add more photos and features.

Metra.VirtualAve.Net presents an eclectic assortment of photographs of railroad equipment and activities of the Metra commuter rail system in the Chicagoland area. I've included what I liked, what I found interesting, and occasionally that which I particularly didn't like.

This site specializes in the equipment and operation of the Chicagoland commuter rail Metra system. Viewed by many railfans as hardly worth notice (I actually had someone come up to me with such comments while photographing an incoming scoot one day), alas it often gets bastard son treatment.

Metra.VirtualAve.Net contains all of the Metra-related photpgraphs in Chicago.Railfan.Net, while Metra.VirtualAve.Net also has photos I've taken in 1998 that are not in the Chicago.Railfan.Net collection. Metra.VirtualAve.Net also remains a work in progress, with plans to add more photos and features.

CowsOnParade.VirtualAve.Net isn't a railroad site, but rather an exhibit of photos of some of the many life-sized cow sculptures that were on display in Chicago during the summer and fall of 1999. Perhaps a few of the transit-related cow photos will be included in the Chicago.Railfan.Net collection.

Chicago.Railfan.Net, Metra.VirtualAve.Net, and Chicago.Railfan.Net share a common custom-developed photo display engine technology.

Chicago & North Western Memories 1998 presents a collection of photos of railroad equipment still wearing the colors of the C&NW. These photos are all included in the Chicago.Railfan.Net collection. This is a static site, unlikely to change other than editorial changes or repair of obsolete links.

Circus Train in Chicago 1998 presents a collection of photos of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus train during its 1998 visit to Chicago. These photos are all included in the Chicago.Railfan.Net collection. This is a static site, unlikely to change other than editorial changes or repair of obsolete links.

Chicago & North Western Memories 1998 and Circus Train in Chicago 1998 were experiments leading up to the custom-developed photo display engine of my newer Web sites. They used a Perl script that generated the small set of Web pages which comprise the site, within the constraints of the hosting site. You might also see my ramblings about their history.
