Metra has announced plans to replace and retire locomotives. "New locomotives on the horizin One other year 2000 budget item that we can share with you now is Metra's first order for new locomotives in a decade. It will compreise 26 units. Fifteen will replace the fleet that operates on the Milwaukee District West and North lines. Now more than 23 years old, these are pre-Metra and pre-Regional Transportation Authority units originally acquired by the Milwaukee Road. Twice rebuilt and still providing dependable service, these locomotives become more costly to maintain year after year. Another rebuild is out of the question. The other nine new locomotives will be used to provide new service and to increase the spare ratio needed to protect service at all times. Our last new locomotives arrived in 1992. The average age of our 130-unit fleet is over 16 years." -- On the (Bi)Level, Metra, October 1999

The Metra rail system is formally known as the Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corporation. They have maps, schedules, fares, online ticket ordering, and some photos on their World Wide Web site at http://www.metrarail.com. Well worth a visit.
