Chicago & North Western 5529 GM EMD GP40 diesel-electric locomotive in the locomotive yard just east of the Locomotive Maintenance Facility in the Proviso (Melrose Park, Illinois) rail yard. CNW 5529 was formerly New York Central 3040, Penn Central 3040, and Conrail 3040.

CNW 5529, model GP40, built 11/65, builder number 30977, acquired by C&NW in 9/80, previous road number CR 3040, C&NW paint scheme OY ["Old Yellow," pre-1981 with Railroad Roman numerals (i.e. Stagecoach yellow)], renumber planned to UP 665. C&NW 5529: First Number: NYC 3040, Second Number: PC 3040, Third Number: CR 3040, Builder's Date: Nov 1965, Builder's Number: 30977. Built new as New York Central, renumbered to PC after merger of NYC and Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 which formed Penn Central. Renumbered to CR after formation of Conrail in 1976. Returned by CR to Precision National Corp. lessor/owner in 1980 upon expiration of 15-year lease. The original owner/lessor sold all 13 units to Precision National Corp. in July 1980. C&NW leased the units from PNC in late 1980 and purchased the 13 units in March 1981. All 13 units were rebuilt between June and December 1981 at Oelwein shops. Equipped with Automatic Train Control and Automatic Train Stop. Equipped with Dynamic braking. EMD order number 7851. EMD GP40, 13 units (5525-5537), B-B, 16-654E3 engine, 61:16 gear ratio, 3,000 horsepower, 277,000 pounds operating weight. C&NW 5529 was built in November 1965, EMD order number 7851, builder number 30977, as New York Centeral 3040. Renumbered to Penn Central 3040 in 1968 and to Conrail 3040 in 1976. Returned to the owner/leasor in 1980 upon expiration of the 15 year lease. Purchased by Precision National Corp. in July 1980. C&NW leased the unit in late 1980 and purchased it during 1981, and renumbered to C&NW 5529. Rebuilt between June and December 1981 in C&NW's Oelwein {Iowa shops}, including new electrical cabinets and modifications to the throttle and dynamic braking controls.
